Volunteer Roles

Here are some of the many ways that volunteers can help the Foundation:

First Saturday: Volunteer Day at TPF
First Saturday of the month, 9:00 a.m.-noon (except summer months)
Volunteer Level: All
Join the Theodore Payne Foundation family of volunteers as we improve and care for our grounds. We clear, clean, plant, mulch, prune, weed and perform other tasks needed to tend the gardens. TPF provides shovels, trowels, rakes, loppers, hoes, pruners, plants and other tools, as well as healthy and nutritious snacks and refreshments. Bring gloves and kneepads for your personal use. New volunteers are encouraged to attend First Saturdays.

Data Entry
Volunteer Level: All

The Foundation generates a wide range of data concerning our programs, operations and events. Work with staff to enter this data into the Foundation’s databases.

 Grounds Maintenance/Weed Warriors
Volunteer Level: All
Enjoy sunshine and fresh air as you help us maintain our 22-acre property! Tasks include removal of mustard and other non-native vegetation from Wild Flower Hill; maintaining trails; fall planting of wild flower seeds; and ongoing weeding. If you’re available on weekdays, two- and four-hour shifts can really make a difference!

Nursery Assistance
Volunteer Level: Sun Cup/Blazing Star
Move plants from growing areas to the sales yard and weed potted plants and demonstration gardens in the nursery – both great ways to learn about natives (and non-native weeds!).

Office Assistance
Volunteer Level: All
Help with a variety of office tasks, including answering phones, inventory, filing and mailings.

Volunteer Level: All
Represent the Foundation at Earth Day celebrations, street fairs, plant sales and other local events – important opportunities for reaching the public with our message of using drought-tolerant native plants that beautify home gardens, use less water and support wildlife.

Sales Yard
Volunteer Level: Blazing Star

If you enjoy meeting and talking with new people, our sales yard offers a fun opportunity to help customers select and purchase plants and to introduce first-time visitors to our nursery. An excellent opportunity to learn all about the plants we grow and sell.

Seed Room
Volunteer Level: Sun Cup/Blazing Star

Work with our Seed Program Manager to learn how to harvest, process and store native plant seeds for future propagation

Hollywood Farmers’ Market
Volunteer Level: All
Assist staff, sell plants and share important information about TPF and gardening with natives at the Hollywood Farmers’ Market on the first Sunday of each month.

L.A. Arboretum
Volunteer Level: Sun Cups and Blazing Stars
TPF plants are sold on the Gift Shop patio of the L.A. Arboretum in Arcadia. Our volunteers assist Arboretum visitors with native plant selection and information about the Foundation.

Volunteer Level: Sun Cup/Blazing Star

This volunteer position requires a long-term commitment. Help us propagate native plants for our retail nursery. Some experience is preferred.

School/Community Credit Projects
Saturdays – flexible.
Know any school kids who need community service credits? An activity at TPF is an excellent way to earn credits, get outdoors and learn about California’s natural heritage. We can arrange half-day or full-day projects. Contact andrew@theodorepayne.org to make arrangements.

Eagle Scout/Gold Award Projects
Saturdays – flexible.
The Theodore Payne Foundation partners with Girl and Boy Scout troops, serves as a place for completing Eagle Scout projects and offers advice about how to make your off-site native plant project successful.

If you would like more information or have other skills that you would like to use to help advance our mission, please call us at (818) 768-1802 or e-mail Volunteer Coordinator Andrew Chaves,   andrew@theodorepayne.org.
