Description

This comprehensive four-session course for home gardeners offers a sound foundation in design styles and process, the importance of sustainability and how to model a garden after patterns in nature. Students will devise a base/plot plan, compile a locally appropriate plant palette, and create a simple design. Prior to the class, students will complete a preliminary questionnaire, warm-up exercise for their site, and familiarize themselves with drawing software if choosing to produce plans digitally.

Andreas Hessing is an artist and landscape designer and contractor (scrubjaystudios.com). For more than 20 years, his site-specific installations have celebrated regional biodiversity while focusing on the philosophical, political and social implications of California’s indigenous flora.

Course Requirements

Our Right Plant, Right Place class must be completed before the start of the design course. It is offered monthly, typically on the first Saturday of the month. The next session is March 6.

This class will meet for four three-hour sessions via Zoom. This includes break time. We understand that this might be more Zoom time than some folks are used to, and we encourage you to consider this before registering.

Students will produce a produce a garden plan either digitally or through hand drawing at 1/4″ or 1/8″ scale. For hand-drawn plans, please make sure that you have access to camera that can take legible photos. For digital plans, we recommend using a free program such as OpenOffice Draw or LibreOffice Draw, but you may use other drawing software if you prefer. Work will be shared through a class Dropbox folder.

Upon registering, you will receive a confirmation email from Eventbrite. There will be a link to the warm-up packet under Additional Information. The warm-up packet will include information about software as well as a list of supplies for hand drawing your plans. Due to time limitations, students will be expected to have a basic understanding of the software prior to class.

As this series will meet entirely online, we encourage students to visit public landscapes to the see native plants in person prior to completing your design. We will include a list of recommend parks, wildlife areas, and botanical gardens in the warm-up packet.

Cancellation Policy

Full refunds will be given if the cancellation request is made by March 11. The following fees will be attached to cancellations made after March 11: $100 for members, $110 for non-members, $110 for member couples, $120 for non-member couples. No refunds will be given within 7 days of the first class, and postponements will only be given within 7 days of the first class. Please note that Eventbrite’s fee is nonrefundable.
