TPF horticulture staff have been evaluating the post-fire flora of the Verdugo Mountains for use in the garden over the past year and we are excited to bring to you some of our experiences and gardens we are developing for this very purpose. In 2017 the Verdugo Mountains had a major fire which burned thousands of acres of chaparral and coastal sage scrub plant communities. With permission from the land manager and support from Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust, TPF surveyed and seed banked several dozen taxa of fire following annuals, bulbs, and herbaceous perennials. Early in 2019, we planted out 600 plants in an area of wildflower hill in order to document their cultivation, as well as to regenerate the seed for future use. Come learn about our local fire followers, their garden uses and propagation protocols, and the future of this exciting new program.
Please follow the registration link to RSVP as space is limited.
The class will be comprised of a half-mile walk around our property on gravel roads and dirt trails. Please bring water and sun protection, and dress accordingly (closed-toe shoes required).
