A 2005 report by the California Energy Commission shows that water-related energy usage in California consumes 19% of all electricity and 30% of all natural gas used in the State. Nearly 90 billion gallons of diesel fuel are consumed as well. Much of this is used to convey water to southern California. Energy is used to move water to treatment plants, at the treatment plant itself, then to the source of use, and finally in wastewater treatment plants.
