- Introduced into cultivation in California by Theodore Payne.
- From California Native Plants, Theodore Payne's 1941 catalog: "A deciduous vine of very rapid growth, soon covering a large area. The foliage is large, rich green and very attractive. Grows best in shade or partial shade. Gallon cans, 60c."
