Theodore Payne Foundation for Wild Flowers & Native Plants is proud to announce the appointment of Richard Schulhof as the new President of its Board of Directors. Schulhof brings decades of visionary leadership and horticultural expertise to the Foundation, reinforcing its mission to promote ecological landscaping across Southern California.

“I’m honored to serve as Board President of the Theodore Payne Foundation. The work of TPF  to promote and conserve the remarkable native plants of our region, while also helping us adapt to increasing environmental challenge, has never been more important. ” Schulhof said. “With Amy Greenwood’s outstanding leadership, and an exemplary staff and board, I look forward to helping grow TPF’s vital mission ”

Schulhof’s appointment follows his recent recognition as the 2023 Horticulturist of the Year by the Southern California Horticultural Society, honoring a career that has included horticultural practice and education across the region. Most recently, Schulhof served as CEO of the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden, retiring in 2023. Under his leadership, the Arboretum completed the new Visitor Plaza and initiatives such as Crescent Farm, a model for water conservation and climate adaptation. Schulhof also held leadership roles at Harvard University’s Arnold Arboretum and Descanso Gardens, championing education, sustainability, and community engagement. Previously, his research included stewardship strategies for forest ecosystems, and the design and interpretation of native plant displays in public gardens.

“We are thrilled to welcome Richard as our new Board President,” said Amy Greenwood, Executive Director of the Theodore Payne Foundation. “I’m excited to have his expertise in running horticultural institutions, and in bringing people together around native plants.

The Foundation thanks Carlos Flores, who served as President for the past year. Carlos will continue to serve as a member at large.
